Chompy's Tooth Adventure

Learn how to keep your smile super strong and sparkly!

Your amazing teeth

Teeth help you bite, chew, talk and smile. They're covered in enamel, the hardest stuff in your whole body. Even harder than bones!

20
baby teeth most kids have. They start falling out around age 6.
32
grown-up teeth come in later. They have to last your whole life!
🐛
Sugar bugs (germs) love sweets. They make acid that can put holes in teeth, called cavities.

How to brush like a pro

  1. A tiny dot of toothpasteJust a pea-sized blob. Ask a grown-up to help squeeze.
  2. Tilt toward your gumsPoint the bristles where your teeth meet your gums. Sugar bugs hide there!
  3. Tiny, gentle circlesBrush softly, like you're petting a kitten. No hard scrubbing.
  4. Outsides, insides, chewing topsEvery tooth has three sides to clean. Don't forget the back ones.
  5. Say hi to your tongueGive it a gentle brush too. It helps keep your breath fresh.
  6. Spit it outSpit the foam into the sink. Do this every morning and every night!

Flossing tip: When your teeth touch each other, a grown-up can help you floss once a day. Floss gets the crumbs that brushes can't reach.

Visiting the dentist

The dentist is a tooth doctor who helps keep your smile healthy. Here's what might happen:

You sit in a chair that goes up and down like a ride.
A bright light helps the dentist see inside.
They count your teeth. How many do you have?
A buzzy brush polishes your teeth till they shine.
Sometimes they take tooth pictures called X-rays.
You can ask questions anytime. They love questions!

For grown-ups

  • Use fluoride toothpaste: a rice-grain smear for kids under 3, a pea-sized amount for ages 3 to 6.
  • Most kids need help brushing until about age 7 or 8, when they can manage on their own.
  • Schedule a first dental visit by the first birthday, then check-ups as the dentist recommends (often every 6 months).
  • Replace toothbrushes every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
  • Offer water between meals and keep sweets and juice mostly to mealtimes.

This guide is for general learning. Your child's dentist can give advice for their specific needs.

Keep smiling! 😁 Love, Chompy
