Routines that work: predictability with ease.

A routine isn't a prison — it's a map. When your child knows what comes next, they cooperate more and fight less. See the 4 daily anchors, age examples and what to do when the week goes off script.

Why it works

Predictability turns off the alarm in the brain.

When a child knows what comes next, the brain doesn't need to stay on alert. That frees up energy to play, learn and cooperate. That's why schools work — not because they're rigid, but because they're repetitive.

⚠️

The most common mistake

Trying to control the whole day — minute by minute. Focus on a few fixed anchors and let the middle of the day breathe. A rigid routine becomes guilt every time life happens.

The 4 anchors

Pin down a few things, let the rest go.

Four points of the day that hold everything up.

1
☀️

Wake-up

Same time (±30 min) sets the body clock. Early natural light is the best alarm.

2
🍽️

Meals

Breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner in fixed windows prevent hunger meltdowns — the hidden 5 pm villain.

3
🎒

Transitions

School drop-off/pick-up, bath, screen time. Friction points: warn ahead of time.

4
🌙

Sleep

Short, repeated ritual (bath → story → dim light) signals the brain it's time to switch off.

By age

Fit it to the size of the child.

🍼
1 – 3 years
  • 2 meals + 2 snacks + 1-2 naps.
  • Free play > structured activities.
  • Sleep ritual starts 30 min ahead.
🎨
4 – 6 years
  • Visual routine with photos or drawings.
  • Screen time in agreed windows.
  • Add 10 min of unstructured mess each day.
📚
7 – 11 years
  • Homework at a fixed time with a planned break.
  • Simple responsibilities (backpack, tomorrow's clothes).
  • Protected sleep: screens off 1h before bed.
When it goes off script

Travel, illness, party — now what?

🧳

Keep the sleep ritual

Even away from home. Pillow, book, music — pack the anchors along with the clothes.

🤒

Reduce, don't dismantle

On hard weeks, stick with the 2 most important anchors — sleep and meals.

🎉

Announce the disruption

'Today is going to be different because…' — a heads-up prevents 80% of transition meltdowns.
